I was so flattered and honoured to have been asked to be a part of this shoot. I first met the radiant and talented Gillian Campbell years ago at University. Since then, she has really paved her way as one of the top makeup artists in her field. You’ll read below of how much she has accomplished!
This shoot, titled ‘Youth Now’, is Gillian’s Mastered with Val submission for i-D magazine‘s next issue – ‘The Beautiful Issue’. I asked Gillian about the shoot and her inspirations…
> Please describe the concept behind this shoot?
My take on this brief was to cast a mix of culturally rich individuals that showcased diversity in my city (Perth, WA). I wanted to create a cohesive story, and an honest representation of each personality/character, based on a series of questions that I asked each candidate. The images would reveal a truth to be told in each model’s actions/inactions. For instance, a smile, laugh, toughness, individuality or self expression. I wanted to really get to know each of my models before shooting, as this interaction and mutual understanding was key in creating their visual representation. The story as per the brief, was to be shot in the style of photographer Daniel Jackson, and stylist/fashion director of i-D magazine, Alastair McKimm.
> Who and/or what inspires you?
Everything! I’m inspired by everything I see, hear and taste. It varies constantly but right now I’m inspired by how things make me feel. I think that’s a good indicator.
> What are some of your career highlights?
I’d say working with Sam Bryant on the set of British Vogue’s December edition, curated by Kate Moss and shot by Tim Walker, was definitely a highlight. Sam is such a talent! Aside from this, shooting the Patrik Ervell FW14 campaign with Daniel Sannwald was also pretty spectacular, his process and ideas were ingenious, he is so lovely! I’ve also cherished moments working with runway show teams for Burberry, Dior, Sonia Rykiel, Margiela and Vera Wang, not to mention creating a makeup look for Florence Welch’s performance at Kate Moss’s psychedelia themed 40th birthday-bash – pretty out of the box.
> If you could do anyone’s makeup, past or present, whose would it be?
Cate Blanchett. I loved the dual character she portrayed in Jim Jarmusch’s Coffee and Cigarettes. I love how effortlessly beautiful she is and how she can just transform.
